Varnish not starting errors in syntax

I am scratching my head trying to figure out what is wrong with the syntax in my .vcl file. I keep getting the error:

Symbol not found: 'req.method' (expected type BOOL):
('input' Line 13 Pos 9)
    if (req.method == "PURGE") {

Running VCC-compiler failed, exit 1
