PublishPress Capabilities
PublishPress Capabilities gives WordPress teams control over who can do what, and what each user sees. I worked on role management, editor controls, admin customization, recovery and ongoing maintenance.
Across 600+ closed pull requests, I’ve contributed new features, bug fixes, compatibility updates and releases as part of the PublishPress team.
Across the plugin
- Dashboard: a central place to discover features and control which tools are enabled.
- Roles and Capabilities: creating and copying roles, assigning permissions, and working with post types, taxonomies and other plugins’ capabilities.
- Editor Features: role based controls for the block editor and Classic Editor, including buttons, panels and metaboxes.
- Admin Features: controlling toolbar items and dashboard widgets so each role gets an appropriate workspace.
- Admin Styles: role specific admin branding, colors and styling.
- Admin Notices: organizing notices into a dedicated area while preserving their content and behavior.
- Admin Menus: discovering menu entries, controlling access, editing labels and ordering links and supporting the Free and Pro feature boundaries.
- Profile Features: controlling what appears on the user profile screen.
- Redirects: destinations for login, logout, registration and first login.
- Frontend Features: role targeted element visibility, CSS and body classes.
- Navigation Menus: controlling frontend menu visibility by role and login state.
- Backup: automatic and manual backups, restoring permissions and recovering from configuration mistakes.
This work involves both the screens administrators use and the PHP behind them: permission checks, storage, validation, integrations, multisite behavior and backward compatibility.
Connecting Capabilities with AI tools
In PR #1898 — WordPress Abilities API integration, I implemented Capabilities operations as structured actions with permission checks. This gives compatible AI clients a way to discover and use plugin functionality through an optional WordPress MCP Adapter connection, without navigating each admin screen.
The integration covers role and capability operations, feature configuration, backups and configuration import/export. Explicit input and output schemas, existing capability checks, validation and preview modes help control automated changes. Application password restrictions also apply to these actions.
Recovery beyond wp-admin
I also added WP-CLI backup recovery and role reset. Administrators with terminal access can list saved backups, restore a previous configuration or reset roles when working through a permissions problem. The commands use the same recovery services as the dashboard.
